Battle for Murfreesboro Chess Club's Online Team
NM Alex King (OjaiJoao) from the Memphis Chess Club has personally invited us to participate in Live Team Battles on lichess.org. Different teams are likely to play on various occasions, including Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, Louisville, and St. Louis. The battles are held on Monday's from 7:00 – 8:30 PM CST. To help level the playing field Alex suggested taking the top 5 scores from each team. It's really all about having collective fun, especially during these times of isolation.

Unrated Matthew Connor
Ironically, the day after Valentine's turned out to be our best tournament turnout to date! It included the current highest rated Tennessee resident, IM Ron Burnett, and one of Tennessee's stronger female players, Jennifer Ishee. We based the tournament on 30 players, and had 27 participate. Despite the small deficit, we were able to payout the full prize fund once again. Furthermore, we even added a second B Class Prize due to the big participation in that class!
Our Sincere Gratitude
The success of our tournaments would not be possible without the expertise and dedication of TD Chris Prosser, and our utmost thanks always goes out to him. It is with the same sentiment that we extend our thanks to the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church for the blessing of their facilities. The setup and restoration of the church was aided by the efforts of Zach Moore and Jeff Spears, and we certainly thank them. And for greeting everyone upstairs, many thanks goes to Laurel & Billie.
Of course, we thank all of those who participated in the Open, and especially to those who traveled the far reaches of Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. And a special thanks is extended to Patrick Dowd of Alabama for selflessly promoting and supporting our events over the years.
Our Club Affiliate
Our U.S. Chess club affiliate fee was graciously and quietly donated by Gary Garner during a round of play at the Murfreesboro Open on Saturday. The donation leaves no doubt that we will be hosting the 2020 Battleground Murfreesboro tournament again on August 15th, and that we can honor our upcoming blitz events without interruption. Thank you, Gary for the generous donation!

Last Rated Blitz! – Thursday 09/26/2019
Due to the upcoming holidays landing on the last Thursday in October, November and December this year, September will be the last rated blitz tournament of 2019. We will resume them in January 2020.
Attendance
One of the best ways to improve is to play lots of over the board chess. The MCC put together a great chess team in February in order to defeat the Jackson Club. By attending the MCC you not only improve your play, but help others do the same. Please note that the club will not meet on Oct. 30, Nov. 28, and Dec. 26.
Scholastics & Beginners
In the tradition of the former Rutherford County Chess Club, we will try to allot the first hour of club meetings to tutor any beginners and children for free.
Scheduling ahead of time is very helpful whenever possible.

Rated Blitz – This Thursday, August 29th
The club has invested in 5 new chess clocks with the aid of a generous contribution from Virginia Yang! The monthly blitz events will certainly benefit, and this Thursday will be the first to see their use. Past winners include two-time undefeated, Zach Moore, Eric Ramsay, and by sheer luck, Norbert Thiemann. Please join the USCF and participate in this lively event!
2019 Battleground Murfreesboro - Results
A big congratulations goes to Lucas Pao and Michael Shuey for their outright wins in our most successful tournament to date! We welcomed Ryan Deering, who is a St. Louis Chess Club employee, 6 players from Jackson, 2 players from KY, a couple of players from UT Knoxville, another from OH, and Patrick Dowd graciously brought Joel Friedman from Huntsville so he could play. We were only a few players shy of our goal, so as in the past, we were able to pay out the full prize fund. Another bonus treat was having some notable spectators, such as a student from the Zach Moore's chess class at the Fusion Group, longtime friend of Murfreesboro chess, Donald Burgess, and a recent member of the MCC, Phil Lam. Enormous thanks goes to Chris Prosser for his fine work with directing the event, and we are setting our sights on hosting more in the future. Please see below for awarded prizes.

Murfreesboro vs. Jackson Results!
On February 9, 2019 members of the Jackson City Chess Club graciously traveled to play in a rated team match against their host, the Murfreesboro Chess Club. Round One produced a healthy lead for the MCC with 4.5 to 1.5, but Jackson rallied with an impressive showing of 4.0 to 2.0 in Round Two. The biggest upset came in Round One when Micah Warren secured a win against Brad Smith, who was rated 366 points higher. Some other notable highlights are that Expert Richard Cale has come back to competitive chess after being away from the game for 23 years, and that Brian Smith narrowly edged out the only perfect score during the match. The event was a lot of fun, and we hope to play more teams in the future.
